New Students: Transfer Courses

This is a summary of the section of this handbook that describes transfer courses.

The use of “Transfer Courses” is short-hand to cover what we call “pre-program credits” or “PpC.” Here is a summary of the policies regarding pre-program credits (PpC) for the EdD program:

  • Definition: “Pre-program credits” (PpC) include transfer courses (graduate courses taken outside Boise State University) and carry-over courses (graduate courses taken at Boise State University) prior to the EdD program.
  • Credit Limit: Students may use up to 30 credit hours of PpC toward the EdD program, subject to coordinator recommendation and Dean approval.
  • Usage: PpC can be applied to selected core, research, cognate, and elective courses.
  • Submission: A separate sheet must be completed and reviewed by the coordinator before listing PpC on the official plan of study.
  • Age Limit (Standard): Courses completed within the past five years ago (from the EdD program start date) are generally recommended and approved.
  • Age Limit (Older Courses): Courses older than five years may be considered after program admission.
  • 10-Year Rule: The degree must be completed within 10 years of the first applied PpC; courses that will be more than 10 years old at graduation require an appeal.
  • Older Course Appeal: Appeals must include a one-page letter justifying the relevance of the knowledge/skills (not cost/time savings) and must be approved by the Graduate College Dean.
  • Maximum Age: Courses that will be more than 15 years old at graduation will not be considered.
  • Minimum Grade: PpC must have a grade of B or better.
  • Ineligible Courses: Undergraduate courses, culminating activities (e.g., portfolio, thesis), Comp Exam, Seminar, Internship hours, and non-graduate post-graduate work (e.g., workshops) are ineligible for PpC.
  • Transfer Course Syllabi: An official course syllabus (or evidence of substantive work) is required for all transfer courses (taken outside Boise State), but not for carry-over courses (taken at Boise State).
  • Prior Degree Credits: Graduate credits earned as part of a master’s degree or an incomplete graduate degree are generally eligible.
  • Final Approval: The Graduate College Dean makes the ultimate decision on applying PpC, based on the coordinator’s recommendation.
