A Reflection on Studying Spanish

Looking Back

At Boise State, I have had the experience of applying my Spanish skills in various classes such as Spanish literature, Spanish for business, and conversational and presentational Spanish which gave me relevant skills to strengthen my fluency in my undergraduate studies. I found my classes to be essential as a Business Administration double major to connect with the Hispanic community in my personal and professional life. My classes helped me understand business terminology related to Spanish, Hispanic markets and institutions in the United States and other countries, and strong cultural literacy and appreciation.

Looking Forward

As the Hispanic population is projected to grow in the United States, the skills I learned in my classes have been essential to a future career in business. After graduation, it will be crucial to maintain cultural and linguistic fluency and business connections with Hispanic clients in the Treasure Valley. In my professional career my network of diverse clients. Speaking Spanish can bring new opportunities across a language barrier I will be able to cross compared to others without Spanish competence to potential clients. As a learner, I want to keep expanding my knowledge of Spanish history, culture, and linguistics, and maintain a strong connection with the local Hispanic community.

Next Steps

To expand my cultural fluency in Spanish, it will be critical to stay up-to-date with pop culture and news in the Hispanic community. From sources such as KTVB, I can read articles in Spanish and maintain my reading skills, learn new vocabulary, and stay in touch with recent events. Expanding my social circle to include Spanish speakers is also valuable to maintain my speaking and conversational skills. It can also lead to social events such as being invited to quinceañeras and other Hispanic community events. I can also use online resources to expand my Spanish history and understand the events that shaped the Hispanic world today.
