Graduate Assistantships

OVERVIEW

Any student qualifying for admission may apply for a graduate assistantship.

From year-to-year, there are a varying but overall limited number of graduate assistantships offered annually through the College of Education’s Dean’s Office. Awards consist of a stipend plus a waiver of tuition for fall and spring semesters. A full-time graduate assistant, who will be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours, will be expected to work 20 hours per week. A part-time graduate assistant, who will be enrolled in 5-8 credit hours, will be expected to work 10 hours per week.

TYPES OF GA WORK

Teaching assistantship (TA) work: involves tasks related to the teaching undergraduate or graduate classes; work is assigned by a department professor. These courses are selected based on their enrollments and may include lower and/or upper division courses.

Research assistantship (RA) work: involves tasks related to research projects undertaken by the assigned professor.

OTHER INFORMATION

Summer stipends and/or fee waivers are dependent on funds. Generally speaking, the stipend of a full-time GA is $16,500 per year (pre-tax). Check with the program coordinator for current stipend amounts.

On-campus housing for GA’s is available but very limited and does not accommodate families. The cost of GA housing is not included in the assistantship and is paid by the student.

DUE DATE & PROCESS

  • Due by March 1st. Later applications will be considered if funding remains available
  • Applications will be reviewed by the doctoral faculty and the Dean’s Office
  • Notifications will generally be sent to students by May 30.

Important Notes

  • Graduate assistantships are awarded based on the match between a student’s research interest and those of faculty interested in supervising students.
  • Students must reapply each academic year for a graduate assistantship award. Graduate assistantships are re-awarded based on successful progression in the doctoral program, available funding, and advisor approval.
  • Funding is generally not guaranteed for more than one year (students hired to work on major grants might have long-term funding).
