Double Object pronouns

Double-object pronouns follow the same placement rules learned previously.

The structure when using double object pronouns is the following:

FIRST: Indirect object pronouns SECOND: Direct object pronouns

The indirect object pronoun is placed before the direct object pronoun.

  • If the indirect object pronouns le and les are followed by the direct object pronouns lo, la, los and las, le and less will change to se.

Voy a comprar un coche a José

le lo voy a comprar Se lo voy a comprar
Voy a comprárlelo Voy a comprárselo

More example;

Yo compro una pizza a José.

  • With the rules learned we would say that the indirect object is José, and we would use the indirect object pronoun le.
  • The direct object is pizza, and the direct object pronoun is la.
  • When put together we would say: Yo le la compro.
  • But, we have just learned that le will be replaced by se.

That makes the correct sentence: Yo se la compro.
