In the previous chapters we have learned about regular verbs and the irregular verbs ser and estar. Now, we are going to look at a set of verbs that are irregular but have a set of rules just like regular verbs. These verbs are called stem-changing verbs. Some of you might called them boot verbs.
What is a stem-changing verb?
when conjugating a regular verb, let’s take the verb hablar for example, the stem habl– is unchanged throughout the entire conjugation. We would then, eliminate the ending -ar, and change the ending of the verb according to the conjugation that we needed.
Example:

| Tú habl-as | Vosotros/as habl-áis |
| El/ella/usted habl-a | Ellos/ellas/ustedes habl-an |
In a stem-changing verb not only we have to change the ending of the verb, but we also have to change the stem.
There are three types of stem-changing verbs. Verbs that change from e-ie (normally the second e), e-i, and o-ue. Note, that the verb conjugates as a regular verb only on nosotros/as and vosotros/as.
