Decir la hora/Telling time
LA HORA
In Spanish, you need the verb SER to express time as seen below:
NUMBERS | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 | VERB SER |

To express the time at that moment you need the following structure:
SER form (es/son) + la/las+ singular or plural number
1. It is one o’clock
Es la una
2. It is two o’clock
Son las dos
Adding minutes
You can add minutes to the hour by using the word “y” which in English is and.
It is five and ten minutes
Son las cinco y diez minutos.
NOTE: You can also use the words half and quarter.
Half: media
Quarter: cuarto
It is half past three
Son las tres y media
Ejemplos:
- La clase es a las seis menos cuarto. The class is at quarter to six.
- La clase de matemáticas es a las once y cinco de la mañana. The math class is at eleven five in the morning.
