Dative prepositions
In addition to indicating the indirect object of some sentences, the dative case is also used with several prepositions.
aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu

| Das Mädchen war von der Welt verlassen! | The girl was abandoned by the world! |
| Sie geht in die Welt hinaus, und nach einer Weile trifft sie einen Mann. | She goes off into the wide world, and after a while meets a man. |
| Er ist hungrig, also holt sie ein Stück Brot aus ihrer Tasche und gibt es dem Mann. | He is hungry, so she takes a piece of bread out of her pocket and gives it to the man. |
| Danach kommt ein Kind, das friert. Das Mädchen bedeckt das Kind mit seinem Kleid. | Afterwards there comes a child who is freezing. The girl covers the child with her dress. |
| Später kommen noch zwei Kinder, und sie ist genauso großzügig gegenüber diesen Kindern. | Later two more children come, and she is just as generous with these children (vis-à-vis). |
| Außer den drei Kindern und dem Mann kommt niemand vorbei. | Nobody else passed her by except for the three children and the old man. |
