Das Imperfekt: haben – Simple Past: to have

The simple past of haben is used in both written and spoken language in the past tense. While ich habe gehabt is gaining some traction, at this point it is still more common to hear ich hatte to say “I had …”

ich hatte wir hatten
du hattest ihr hattet
er/sie/es hatte sie hatten
Gerdi hatte ein Stück Brot und alte Kleidungsstücke. Gerdi had a piece of bread and old clothing.
Der Mann und die Kinder hatten weniger. The man and children had less.
Gerdi had a piece of bread and a few pieces of old clothing
