TELLING TIME

In Spanish, you need the verb SER to express time as seen below:

NUMBERS VERB SER
SINGULAR 1 ES
PLURAL 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 SON

To express the time at that moment you need the following structure:

SER form (es/son) +  la/las+  singular or plural number

1. It is one o’clock
Es la una

2. It is two o’clock
Son las dos

 

Adding minutes


You can add minutes to the hour by using the word “y” which in English is and.

It is five and ten minutes
Son las cinco y diez minutos.

NOTE: You can also use the words half and quarter.

Half: media
Quarter: cuarto

It is half past three
Son las tres y media
