(Language) Language Proficiency
What is Intercultural Competence?
“The need for language competence in a global society touches every sector of life. From career preparation in an international workforce to citizen diplomacy and national defense to one’s role in a social or virtual community, communication across cultures is key. Learners today must have the language proficiency to communicate with global audiences, the insight into the cultural perspectives that shape those audiences, and the ability to behave appropriately in a variety of cultural contexts.”

Artifacts Demonstrating My Intercultural Competence
Tinker the T-Rex, Spanish for Healthcare
As a Document Translator, I collaborated with a group of my peers to translate exhibition signage for the Discovery Center of Idaho’s “Tinker the T-Rex” exhibition from English to Spanish. This includes both written translations and audio recordings of signage. After the translation process was completed, I volunteered as a Spanish-speaking exhibition guide on the DCI’s “Multilingual Day.”
English Teaching, Study Abroad Experience
While studying abroad, I worked with a group of volunteers to host weekly English language workshops for students between ages 16-29. My responsibilities included designing lesson plans, conducting interactive language activities, and tailoring instruction to meet the diverse needs of my students. In doing so, my fellow teachers and I facilitated the linguistic development of our students and provided opportunities for cultural exchange.
