Remix an Activity
Why Remix?
I can remix my selected activity by incorporating authentic materials or a digital humanities project.
In this section, you’ll learn how to remix your selected Pathways Project activity by bringing in authentic materials and digital humanities sites. We’ll also discuss how to find and incorporate photos, illustrations, video, audio, news articles, and infographics. To finish, you’ll create a reading, listening or viewing (interpretive) activity.
You may wish to remix an activity to:
- To be committed to diverse voices and perspectives by representing multicultural and multilingual communities more equitably in teaching materials and learning experiences
- To integrate more opportunities for intercultural competence which directly aligns to the World Readiness Standards
- To provide more comprehensible input that will aid your students in successfully engaging in the Pathways interpersonal speaking activity
- To continue being an involved learner; remixing gives teachers new ways for exploring and improving our content expertise
Revising and Remixing: A French Example
Watch this excerpt from our Fall 2022 PNCFL Conference presentation for an example on how Pathways Lead Teacher, Sharon Westbrook, revising and remixes a novice level French activity for her junior high classroom.
The right to combine the original or revised content with other open content to create something new (e.g., incorporate the content into a mashup).
Authentic Materials are real-life examples of language used in everyday situations. Created by and for native speakers, they help students to learn more about the target culture and provide an opportunity for students to practice their reading and listening comprehension.
Teachers can scaffold these materials to use with any proficiency level by selecting materials that are age appropriate and tailoring the tasks students are asked to complete.
Digital Humanities projects take collections of video, text, audio or other artifacts and transform them into something that is widely accessible online. They are often interactive and bring a new element or perspective to the original products. Through these projects, we can ask and investigate fundamental questions about how individuals and societies live, think, interact, and express themselves.
