Disinfo Squad Job Description

Become a member of the Disinfo Squad! 

We’re seeking undergraduate and graduate students to be trained as information literacy reference, educators, and social media influencers as part of a grant funded by the Department of Homeland Security. If you opt for Track 1 you’ll be paid to take an 8 week course and share your learning with our community. If you choose Track 2 you’ll take the first 8 weeks of training, then use it to conduct your own research project. You can learn more about this program on the DHS Targeted Violence and Terrorism Grant website. Our project is listed under Promising Practices.

Disinfo Squad Project Objectives for Track 1 – January 13-March 10:

  1. Strengthen our information literacy skills to act as information literacy reference, educators, and influencers in social media spaces through an 8-week online course and weekly lab meetings.
  2. Review Disinfo Debunking Station website.
  3. Facilitate a virtual Escape Room game in classes on campus and public libraries
  4. Produce digital media content related to media literacy best practices
  5. Plan and produce programming for Misinfo Week in the first week of March

Disinfo Squad Project Objectives for Track 2 – January 13-April 21:

  1. In addition to the objectives above, conduct research on topics related to aspects of disinformation as a tool for radicalization
  2. Document and disseminate research through a poster presentation at the Undergraduate Research Showcase or draft an article for publication

Applicants

We’re seeking applicants with a strong interest in media literacy, communications and education. Students with strengths in writing, speaking/presenting, and digital communications are preferred. In this position, you will have the opportunity to work creatively and collaboratively with a variety of students, departments across campus, and clients in the community. This position will provide you with valuable experience in team collaboration, time management, project management, and virtual and in-person communication.

The position provides a competitive hourly rate of $15 per hour. Students work an agreed upon set of hours for learning, reference, teaching, promotional activities, and research during the school semester. We anticipate a minimum of 7 hours of work each week – at least 5 hours of independent work, and 2 hours of in-person lab work (Fridays from 1-3pm).
