Japanese Level 2, Activity #8: “Counters” / “助数詞” (Face-to-Face)

Description:

In this activity, students will practice talking about counters, and then put counters to use in talking about what they will bring to a picnic.

Semantic Topics:

Counters, items,  カウンター, アイテム

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1 – Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • COMM 2.1 – Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can identify the correct counter to use for a small variety of items.
  • I can discuss what happened at an event and how well/poorly it went.

Materials Needed:

Main Activity:

Use the pictures of various amounts of items to go over the different counters. The ones we will go over are いくつ、何本、何枚、何冊、何匹、何人。

Go over each picture and ask 「これは何ですか。」「どの助数詞を使用しますか。」「何本・何枚・何冊ありますか。何人・何匹いますか。」

Have the students ask each other questions about an item(s) they have.

アイテムを選んで、このアイテムはどのぐらいあるかクラスメイトに聞いてください。

How many pets do you have?

  • 「ペットが何匹いますか。」

Do you have any siblings? How many siblings do you have?

  • 「兄弟がいますか。兄弟が何人いますか。」

How many books do you own?

  • 「家には本が何冊ありますか。」

How many pens and pencils are in your backpack?

  • 「かばんにはペンとえんぴつが何本ありますか。」

How many T-shirts do you have?

  • 「T-シャツが何枚ありますか。」

If you live in an apartment or dormitory, what floor do you live on? If you live in a house, how many stories is it?

  • 「アパートか寮に住んでいますか。何階に住んでいますか。家に住んでいますか。家が何階ありますか。」

Wrap-Up:

Ask the students what they will be doing after the lab is over.

  • 「今から何をしますか。」

End of activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
