Japanese Level 3, Activity #3: “Weather” / “天気” (Face-to-Face)
Description:
In this activity, students will practice talking about the weather and seasons. Students will talk about transitional weather as well and will practice new vocabulary they learn relating to weather.
Semantic Topics:

Warm-Up
Pictionary! This is a continuation of lab 2
Students will get into groups and compete against one another
There will be a representative for each group
One group will be given a weather-related kanji from a master list.
Students will have 60 seconds to draw the word they received. They cannot use any English.
That group will try to get the other group to guess the kanji (not the English word)
Main Activity
The slides/pictures change from a single picture to two or more pictures that show weather transitions.
ex. The first picture is a bright sun and the second picture is of clouds obscuring the sun. The students would then be expected to respond with something like:
Wrap-Up
Ask students the following questions to finish the lab.
- 好きな天気(季節)は何ですか?
Ask the students what their favorite and least favorite weather (or season) is.
- 嫌いな天気(季節)は何ですか?
End of activity:
- Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
their confidence.
(Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.) - Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
- Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
