Materials Needed

Warm-Up:

Have the students either use their phones or grab iPads for them to use in order to take this Kahoot quiz.]

The quiz is to review some of the rules of the WLRC and labs. The rules and expectations slideshow was shown in 101 so most students should be familiar with the rules and if they’re not, the Kahoot is a perfect introduction!

The Kahoot is ten questions long; the questions and answers are provided below.

After each question is answered, regardless if students answered correctly or not, give a simple explanation for each answer.

For Example: For question one, you may explain that students have to attend a lab every week excluding the first week of class and finals week.

*The Kahoot quiz is not for points. It is merely to show the students what is expected of them.

After the quiz, reinforce the expectations of lab: 100% in Japanese, learning to be open to mistakes and not fully understanding everything presented in lab.

Main Activity:

Now, have the students play the ‘One Word Game.’ The goal is for students to be able to easily respond to your questions, using only one word to respond. The questions will let the students introduce and talk about themselves while practicing their Japanese again.

  • 『One Word」

Start with easier questions, most of which are introductions for the students (each slide will have the numbers for the questions they correspond to).

Now, transition into the more difficult questions. Make sure each student understands the question, but still have them answer with a single word.

Wrap-Up:

  • Let’s do our best this semester.

End of Activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
(Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can introduce myself with my name and other relevant information.
  • I can understand questions about myself and give one-word answers.
  • I can give one-word answers to questions about my surroundings.
