Japanese Level 3, Activity #1: “Hometown” / “故郷” (Online)

Description:

In this activity, students will introduce themselves to their group mates. Students will also practice talking about their hometowns and where they are from.

Practices: Having simple discussions about the past

Perspectives: Learn about where other people are from in Japanese

  • Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written Japanese on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

  • I can ask my group mates about themselves and their hometown.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up:

Introductions (aim for 3 things; name, major, hobbies. Exemplify this for the students. Assistant goes first)

はじめに(名前、専攻、趣味の3つを用います。学生のためにアシスタントが最初に行います。)

How was your summer? (potentially 3 things, but this summer was a unique case)

夏はどうでしたか? (潜在的に3つのことですが、この夏はユニークなケースでした)

Main Activity:

Tell us about your hometown. Take a few minutes to find a picture or two of your hometown.

あなたの故郷について教えてください。あなたの故郷の写真を1つか2つ見つけてください。

  • Where is your hometown?
    • What kind of people live there?
    • What’s the weather like there?
    • What kind of fun things can you do in your hometown?
  • あなたの故郷はどこですか? そこにはどんな人が住んでいますか? 天気はどうですか? 故郷でどんな楽しいことができますか?

  • Does your hometown have any festivals?
    • When are they?
    • What do you do?
    • What are they about?
  • あなたの故郷にはお祭りはありますか? それらはいつですか? 職業はなんですか? それらは何について?

  • What is your favorite thing about your hometown?
  • あなたの故郷で一番好きなことは何ですか?

Split into pairs and ask each other questions about themselves and their hometown.

ペアに分かれて、自分自身と彼らの故郷についてお互いに質問します。

Summer vacation, hometown, hobbies, studies, family, anything is good!

夏休み、故郷、趣味、勉強、家族、何でもいいです!

End of activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
