Japanese Level 3, Activity #2: “Interviews” / “インタビュー” (Online)

Description:

In this activity, students will practice discussing their work and what they do while they are working. Students will also discuss the jobs they want in the future.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken Japanese on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the Japanese language

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions

Materials Needed:

 

Warm-Up:

Begin the activity by opening the Google Slideshow and introducing the Can-Do statements for today’s activity.

Begin by discussing various jobs and the jobs that the students have or would like to have.

Slide 1: Where do you work? What do you do?

Slide 2: If you don’t have a job what kind of job would you like to do?

Main Activity:

Slide 3: Mock Interviews (instructions) in Breakout Rooms!

Copy-paste the questions into the chatbox before sending students to breakout rooms.

One student will be the employer, the other will be the applicant.

Ask three to five questions! Try to include why they want to work, and try to ask when they can start working (this should be a review of scheduling vocab from 102!!!!)

Why do you want to work here?

  • なんでここに働きたいですか

What are your best qualities?

  • ~さんの最高の資質は何ですか

Have you worked at a job like this before?

  • この仕事のような仕事をしたことがありますか

Who is your role model?

  • ~さんのお手本はだれですか

Describe your ideal job?

  • ~さんの最良な仕事はどんな仕事ですか

When can you start working ?

  • いつ働きはじめられますか

Return to the main room, have the ‘employers’ introduce their new employee and why they want to work

Have the employer and applicant switch and go back into breakout rooms and repeat!

Wrap Up:

Ask students, After you graduate college, what sort of job do you want?

End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
