Materials Needed:
Warm-Up:
Begin today’s activity by asking students the following questions:
“Where do you like to buy gifts for friends? For family members?”
- 友達のためのプレゼントを買う場所は何?家族のための?
“Do you prefer to buy or make gifts for friends? Why?”
- プレゼントを作ると買うとどれのほうが好き?
- “頂くものは夏でも小袖 (A padded jacket is an acceptable gift, even in summer). This is a Japanese proverb. Have you heard this phrase? Should we be happy to receive all gifts?” 「頂く物は夏でもこそで」これは日本のことわざです。聞いたことがある?何の意味かな~私たちはすべての贈り物をもらってうれしくけばいいなの?
Main Activity:
For this main activity, students will practice giving gifts in two different ways.
Part One:
The slide will have a beautiful birthday cake because it’s everyone’s birthday! Remind the students to pay attention to the gifts mentioned by other students.
They will then share what they want to receive. You can start with an example that models using “ほしい.” For example: 「わたしはプレイステーション5がほしい。皆は何がほしい?」
Then, they will pick an item mentioned by the group and give it to that person. You can start with an example that models using the verb “あげる .”
The person should thank them. (If this goes by quickly, you can also ask the students to share something they would not like to receive.)
Part Two:
For this second part of the activity, students will have the opportunity to give gifts to famous people, but there is only a limited number of gifts to give.
They will have to work with a partner to decide who they will give the gifts to and be able to share why when they come back to the group.
