Japanese Level 3, Activity #11: “Asking for Favors” / “好意を求める” (Online)

Description: 

In this activity, students will practice asking for favors. Students will also give advice for various scenarios provided.

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken Japanese on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • Given a situation, I can share how I would ask someone for a favor.
  • Given a situation, I can share the favor I would offer someone.
  • Given a situation, I can give advice on how I would approach the situation.

Materials Needed

Warm-Up:

The students will play Charades using vocabulary related to favors. Some of the vocabulary are new, but there are also some that students should be familiar with.

To play, the lab assistant will private message a word to a selected student using the chat feature in Zoom. If needed, set a timer for 30 seconds for students to guess.

Have the students take turns being the person who acts out the word. Students should use only their voice and not text to guess the vocabulary word.

Main Activity:

For larger groups, please follow these instructions:

For this activity, students will be answering discussion questions centered around favors and advice. They should work with a partner to answer the questions and have a short discussion around each slide.

The lab assistant should jump in and out of the breakout rooms to check in on the students and engage with them.

Feel free to ask students other follow-up questions that are not listed on the slides.

Share the slideshow with the students before putting them into breakout rooms of 2-3 people.

For smaller groups, please follow these instructions:

For this activity, students will be answering discussion questions centered around favors and advice.

Take turns having students present the questions to the group and have a short discussion around each slide.

Once the conversation starts to die off, proceed to the next slide. Feel free to ask students other follow-up questions that are not listed on the slides.

-What would you ask your friends to help? 友達からなにをしてもらいたい?
-how would you prevent this in the future? 宿題を忘れないように何をしておく?

(Scenario) Your friend forgot to study for today’s exam.
-What could you offer to help them? 友達になにをしてあげる?
-What advice would you give them to prevent this from happening? 勉強を忘れないように何のアドバイスあげる?

(Scenario) Your friend is feeling a little blue.
-What could you offer to help them feel better? 励ますためになにしてあげる?
-友達一緒になにをする?

(Scenario) You cut your hand while slicing veggies.
-Who could you ask for help? 誰が頼んでほしい
-What could you ask for? 何をしてもらいたい

(Scenario) Your grandparents need help around the house
-What could you do to help? なにをしてあげる?
-What wouldn’t you like to do? してあげたくないことは?

(Scenario) You need new clothes. 
-Who could you ask for help? 誰が頼んでほしい
-What could you ask for? 何をしてもらいたい

(Scenario) You’re the new TA for Japanese 101. The students are struggling with kana.
-What could you do to help? 手伝いになにをしてあげる?
-What advice could you offer the students? 何のアドバイスをあげる

End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
