Japanese Level 3, Activity #13: “Plans for the Future” / “将来設計” (Face-to-Face)

Description:

In this activity, students will discuss planning for the future. First, they will learn about some differences between Japanese graduation and American graduation. They will then answer specific questions that get the students to talk about things they want to do before the day, semester, etc. is over.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of Japanese culture.
  • Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of Japanese culture and their own.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1 – Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • CLTR 2.1-  Analyze the significance of a product (art, music, literature, etc…) in a target culture.
  • COMP 2.1 – Identify, describe and compare/contrast products and their use in the target culture with the learner’s culture.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can compare and contrast graduation in the U.S. and in Japan.
  • I can explain what I want to do before a specific time.
  • I can talk about my plans for the future.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

Talk about graduation in Japan and the U.S.

  • 日本の卒業式は3月です。
  • アメリカの卒業式1年に2回あります。5月と12月にあります。日本では女の人は袴を着て男の人はスーツを着る
  • アメリカではガウンを着るけど大体女の子はドレスを着て男の子はスーツ
  • 日本とアメリカの卒業式は大体同じですが、日本の方がフォーマルだと思います。

Main Activity

Use the following question list to direct the conversation and let the students practice talking about their wants or plans for the future. Feel free to ask the questions in any order. This activity is intentionally open-ended to allow for legitimate conversation practice.

  • 今日中に何をしておきたいですか?
  • 今週中に何をしておきたいですか?
  • 今月中になにをしておきたいですか?
  • 今学期中に何をしておきたいですか?
  • 冬が終わるまでに何をしておきたいですか?
  • 今年中に何をしておきたいですか?
  • 卒業するまでに何をしておきたいですか?
  • 留学に行く前に、何をしておきますか?
  • 死ぬまでに何をしておきたいですか?

Wrap-Up

Wrap the activity up by asking the students if they have any plans for the future!

  • 将来の計画は何ですか?

End of activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
