Japanese Level 4, Activity #3: “Conversations” / “会話” (Online)
Description:
In this activity, students will practice responding to a variety of questions. These will be loose questions that are meant to help spark conversation. So it is okay if you don’t get through all of them or if you change them a bit to better fit what students want to talk about!
Semantic Topics:

- Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
- Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken Japanese on a variety of topics.

- COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
- COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

Materials Needed:
Warm-Up
Open up the google slides presentation. Ask the students about how their semester is going.
- 「今学期はどう?」
What classes are you taking this semester?
- 「今学期のクラスは何?」
After class, what do you often do? Do you do homework? Do you meet with friends?
- 「授業の後で、よく何をする?宿題をする?友達と会う?」
Main Activity
Round robin conversation with the students about the following questions. Stay on a slide as long as you’d like and when the conversation starts to die down, go to the next slide. Again, it is okay to not get through all of these!

What are you watching? (TV shows, YouTube, Movies, etc.)
- 「最近何をみている?テレビとかユーチューブとか映画とか、、、」
How often have you been cooking? What have you been making?
- 「一日に何べん料理をしている?何をつくっている?」
What genre of music have you been listening to recently? What app do you like to use (Apple iTunes, Spotify, etc.)?
- 「最近なんの音楽のジャンルを聞いてる?どちのアプリをつかってる?アップルとかスポティファイとか、、、」
What are you doing to stay active? Do you have any recommendations for fun activities?
- 「最近活動のために何をしている?楽しい活動のすすめがある?」
Do you have any indoor activities? Any recommendations?
- 「室内の活動がある?すすめがある?」
How are you practicing self-care? Are you doing things like meditation or yoga? Do you have recommendations for self-care routines?
- 「セルフケアをしている?めいそうとかヨガをしている?セルフケアの日常のおすすめがある?」
How are you managing your time? Do you have any tools or apps that are helpful you can share?
- 「時間をどうおさめている?最近使っている特別なアプリとか例とかようぐをおしえてくれない?」
Do you have any games that you like to play to pass the time? What genres do you like to play (computer, mobile, or board)?

How are you managing your study time? Does anyone have recommendations for quiet places to study on or off-campus? Do you have study groups you participate in?

- Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
their confidence.
