Japanese Level 4, Activity #4: “Regrets” / “後悔” (Online)

Description:

In this activity, students will talk about past experiences. Students will discuss regrets they might have, and what they might do differently.

Semantic Topics:

Conversation, regrets, past, discussion, 会話, 後悔, 過去, 議論

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken Japanese on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can ask and answer questions about past experiences.
  • I can give suggestions to a problem.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

For this warmup, students will use the ~えば +よかった to express regrets about things they did or didn’t do. Students will take turns sharing their experiences.

  • 「「えばよかった」を使って自分の後悔について話してください。」

Main Activity

Students will now give suggestions to the situation addressed in the slides using 「〜ば」or 「したほうがいい」

  • 「写真を見て進めてください。「~ば」か「したほうかいい」を使ってください。」

Each slide has a sample sentence in the note section.

Ex. The school is closed. What should you do? You should go home and sleep

  • 「学校が休校です。どうすればいい?」
  • 「学校が休みなら、家で寝ればいい」

Wrap-Up

What can you do today?

  • 「今日中にできることは何ですか?」

What can you do this week?

  • 「今週中にできることは何ですか?」

What can you do this month?

  • 「今月中にできることは何ですか?」

What can you do during this semester?

  • 「今学期中にできることは何ですか?」

What can you do this year?

  • 「今年中にできることは何ですか?」

What can you do before you die?

  • 「死ぬ前にできることは何ですか?」

End of Activty:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
