Japanese Level 4, Activity #6: “Verbs and Actions” / “動詞とアクション” (Online)
Description:
In this activity, students will practice talking about different verbs and action words.
Semantic Topics:
Verbs, cooking, without, action, 動詞, 料理, なし, アクション
- Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
- Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken Japanese on a variety of topics.

- COMP 1.2: Identify patterns and explain discrepancies the sounds and the writing system in the target language.

- I can express the idea of without doing~ using 〜ないで.
Materials Needed:
Warm-Up
Open the Google Slideshow and review the Can-Do Statements for today’s activity.
Show the slideshow to students, and have them answer each question
Each slide has two activities
Have students connect these two activities with the following phrase: 〜ながら
Watching TV and cooking = テレビを見ながら料理をする。
- 「スライドには二つの行動が描いてある。「〜ながら」を使って、その行動を説明してください。」
Main Activity
Next, students will practice using 〜ないで
Each slide has two pictures, one with a red X on it
The X is there to prompt the students to use 〜ないで for that side.
Ex. The first picture indicates 宿題をする and has an X on it. The other picture indicates 学校に行く。
例:宿題をしないで、学校に行く。
- 「赤いばつがある側に「〜ないで」を使って、スライドにあることを説明してください。」
Wrap-Up
Ask students the following questions to finish the activity:
What do you do while studying?
- 「勉強をしながら何をする?」
Do you do something while eating?
- 「食べながら何かする?」
Do you go to school while working a part-time job?
- 「学校に行きながらバイトをしている?」
Are you good at doing two things at the same time?
- 「2つのことを同時にすることが得意?」
Please make your own sentence using ~ないで。
- 「「ないで」を使って文を作ってください。」
End of activity:
- Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
their confidence.
