Japanese Level 5, Activity #2: “Kotowaza” / “ことわざ” (Face-to-Face)

Description:

Students will go over body part. After they will learn about Kotowaza.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

  1. Give each student a whiteboard, dry-erase marker, and eraser.
  2. Show a body-related kanji on the screen, and let the students try to draw which body part that kanji corresponds to on their whiteboard.
    1. この漢字の絵を描いてみましょう!
  3. At first, only show the kanji. If they have trouble, give the reading of the kanji or other hints.

Main Activity

  1. Present a kotowaza to the students and give them time to try to figure out its meaning.
    1. If the meaning is not obvious, give them hints without revealing the whole meaning of the kotowaza.
  2. If time permits, once all kotowaza have been solved by the students, provide scenarios within which they will use their new figures of speech.

Wrap-Up

  1. Ask the students what their favorite proverb (or word) was from the activity.
  • あなたの一番好きなことわざ(または言葉)は何ですか?

End of activity:

Can-Do statement check-in… “Where are we?”

  • Read can-do statements and have students evaluate their confidence with cards.
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.

Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
