Japanese Level 5, Activity #7: “Who am I? 20 Questions” / “私は誰でしょう・20の質問” (Face-to-Face)

Description:

Students will practice using descriptive language via a Head’s Up game. Each student will then assume the role of a popular Halloween character and push their ability to question and answer by playing 20 questions.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the Japanese language and their own.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1 – Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1 – Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can accurately describe the characteristics of another person.
  • I can understand and respond to a variety of questions regarding my own characteristics.
  • I can ask questions about an individual’s physical characteristics.

Warm-Up

  1. Who am I? – Each student will pick a random character card.

私は誰でしょうゲームをします。みなさんにはキャラクターカードを選んでもらいます。

2. Without looking, they will put the card on their forehead so the other students could see the card.

カードを見ずに、おでこにあててください。

3. They will have to figure out what their characters are with the help of other students.

彼らは他の学生の助けを借りて、彼らのキャラクターが何であるかを把握する必要があります。

Main Activity

20 Questions – A student will pick a character card. The other students will ask the student with the card up to 20 questions to figure out what the character is.

Wrap-Up

1. What did you do for Halloween when you were a child?

End of activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
