Warm-Up

Pull up the presentation and greet your students in Japanese.

Move to the next slide with the “Can-Do Statements” and read each Can-Do statement in English.

Move to the next slide with the embedded video. Explain the context of Kaiji to the students.

Play the trailer for the students.

Once they have watched the whole trailer, give them an opportunity to give their reactions.

Main Activity

Have the students engage in a meaningful conversation about their preferred forms of entertainment.

Split the students into pairs (a group of three is okay as well).

Present the four various topics (video games, movies/dramas, books, or anime) that the students can discuss. Have each group choose only one of the topics to discuss.

Give each group the Recommendation Checklist that corresponds to their chosen topic.

One student will be the interviewer, while the other student(s) will be the interviewee.

Each checklist has a list of questions at the top of the page with answers the interviewer can circle. These questions include genre and other simpler questions.

Next, there are two other open-ended questions. There is a large note section labelled “メモ” for the interviewer to take relevant notes.

Tell the students that the interviewers’ goal is to think of a recommendation that they would give to the interviewees, based upon the interviewees answers.

Give the students 10 minutes to conduct the interview.

At the end of the 10 minutes, have the interviewers give their recommendations to the interviewees! This should only take a couple of minutes.

If time permits, give each group of students a new topic and let the former interviewees be the interviewers!

Wrap-Up

Give the students a recommendation yourself! You can recommend a movie, video game, anime, etc.

End of activity:

Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
their confidence.
(Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)

Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.

Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
