Program Orientation & F.A.Q.

Curriculum & Instruction Ed.D.

Overview of the Program (opens Google Slides)

When is the application deadline?
  • Fall Start
    • February 1 (priority review). No review after July 1.
  • Summer Start
    • February 1 (priority review), No review after March 31.
  • Spring Start
    • October 1 (priority review), No review after November 15.
Can I go part-time?

Yes, the Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction program recommends that a student be in continuous enrollment during the first 15 months of the program.

How long does it take to complete the program?

It’s possible to complete the basic coursework in a two year period including summers. The dissertation may take a year or longer beyond that time period. The average time-to-completion is 13 terms (approx. 3 – 4 years).

Can I transfer courses to the Ed.D. program that were originally counted for my master’s degree or Ed.S. in Executive Educational Leadership?
Yes. Students are encouraged to count previous graduate-level courses in their Area of Specialization (cognate) credit requirements. Students are encouraged to discuss transfer credits with their advisor. See the pre-program courses page and/or the page about the articulation between the Ed.S. and Ed.D. programs.
Are there any limitations on transfer credits (like, how long ago the credits were granted)?

Yes. A maximum of 30 transfer credits are allowed. Additionally, transfer credit applied to the Area of Specialization should have been completed within five to six calendar years of the time of admission to the Ed.D. program. Slightly older coursework can be considered depending on a number of factors (the program coordinator can discuss these with you). See the pre-program courses page for more information.

How can I financially support myself while in graduate school?

Graduate assistantships are available though limited. For more information, see: https://boisestate.pressbooks.pub/eddci/part/financial-aid/

Who becomes my doctoral advisor (aka, ‘research chair’)?

Students are admitted to the program based on a faculty member’s review of their application and the affinity the student(s) has with her or his research agenda, experience, projects, etc. A student can change advisor over the course of their study, especially if their area of focus changes.

How soon do I need to make a decision about an Area of Specialization (cognate)?

This discussion should begin right away with the advisor. Students are encouraged to take course work in their Area of Specialization in addition to the doctoral courses each semester.
