Educational Specialist for TRIO Upward Bound

About the Position 

This position is at Boise State University in Idaho, you would be an Educational Specialist for all TRIO Highschool students. TRIO- which is not an acronym- is a federal program that is directed to helping students who are first year students, have a documented disability or have low income. Like a teacher you would have three class periods a day and assist with the coordination of program activities including field trips and campus visits. In this role, you would show students the opportunities they can have if they decide  to pursue higher education or jobs after college. You would provide ISAT remediation to students who need it, as well as help students with career exploration. Not only would you be an be an advocate for students you would also be a community and school liaison.

How did you find this position?

I searched up TRIO educational specialist jobs and this one was one that popped up. I tried looking for a high school jobs but the only one I could find was a job at Boise State. 

Summarize the Minimum Qualifications and emphasize the skills relevant to language majors.

The minimum qualification are a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent as well as a drivers license.

Summarize the Preferred Qualifications and emphasize the skills relevant to language majors.

Preferred to be a TRIO Alumni, to have a better understand of the program . Experience in working with low-income and/or first-generation students. Being bilingual in Spanish and have an Idaho Secondary Certificate subject to an area TRIO offers during there summer program. 

What are some other skills that are important for success in this field?

Its important to have computing skills including the use of Microsoft software. This job would also prefer that you have an Idaho Teaching Certificate, preferably in Secondary Education (may be a K-8 certificate if the individual has experience working with high school students).Previous experience working with low income students. Background with financial aid, admissions and scholarships. 

What might be helpful to prepare for a language major to prepare for this field or position

To be prepared to use the language not only conversational use but also be able to talk in a professional and academicmanner.

How is proficiency in another language useful or important in this position?

Very, in this job you will be working with students from different cultures and diverse backgrounds and being able to communicate with them as well as their parents is very important.

How is the ability to communicate and work with people from different cultural backgrounds useful or important in this position?

While working in this job it is important to know that you will be working with a very diverse group of people. So it’s important to understand and learn about other cultures before you start, to gain perspective eon what students and there families might need help with.

The TRIO program is not just in high schools but it is also a program for university students as well.
