Students majoring in linguistics, education, or social work strongly preferred, Basic computer skills required, Experience working with multilingual learners in a culturally diverse, trauma-informed setting strongly preferred, as well as experience learning and using English as a second language strongly preferred. Fluency with the following languages is strongly preferred: Swahili, Spanish, French, Kinyarwanda, Karen, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Dari.

What are some other skills that are important for success in this field?

The ability to communicate through speaking/ presentation skills is very important because you need to communicate well for this type of job. I also think it is important to have the application of knowledge/skills in real-world settings because you are in a space where lots of commotion can happen, and it’s important to know what skills are useful.

What might be helpful to prepare for a language major to prepare for this field or position? 

I think it would be important to remember the best tips that helped you learn a language so you can help the students.

How is proficiency in another language useful or important in this position?

Being proficient is useful because not everyone knows another language and that will just make your skills that much better. More people will want you as an educator and such when you can communicate with more people.

How is the ability to communicate and work with people from different cultural backgrounds useful or important in this position?

The ability to communicate is extremely helpful when trying to teach others because you can create connections in that language as well.
