17 BUSBTC 310: Creating Value with People
NOTE: This course challenge is for students to earn credit in the +Business program.
To challenge BUSBTC 310: Creating Value with People, students must demonstrate their real-world experience in a professional position that provides evidence of understanding and managing organizational behavior, team building, conflict management, motivation, negotiation, career development strategies, and ethical decision-making. Students also must showcase strategies and real-world examples where organizational behavior management can enhance organizational effectiveness, goals, and objectives.
To challenge, students must write short essays offering in-depth analysis and critical thinking on crucial organizational behavior topics, such as the impact of understanding organizational behavior, the influence of human behavior within organizations, interpersonal communication strategies, collaboration in diverse teams, team process and building activities, and leadership and management influence. As a culminating project, students will record a 10-minute video demonstrating a situation in their professional experiences where they effectively applied their understanding of organizational behavior concepts to enhance team performance or solve a workplace challenge. In this video, students will include how they identified the issue, their strategies to address it, and the outcome of their actions.

What this course is (and is not) about
This course will review what affects employee behavior in the workplace and discuss how organizations can manage this behavior and motivate employees to increase organizational commitment and job performance; this will include looking at such aspects of human behavior as personality, perceptions, emotions, moods, and motivation. We’ll also study the importance of diversity, stress, communication, teamwork, and leadership to organizational effectiveness. As you learn about these aspects of organizational behavior, you’ll begin to understand how organizations manage them to create value with their people and for their stakeholders.
This course does not focus on the industry-specific knowledge required for various professions, nor does it delve into operational management strategies, financial analysis, or making techniques. It is not designed to cover the legal aspects of organizational management, such as employment law or regulatory compliance. It does not concentrate on external business environment factors such as economic trends, global trade dynamics, or diverse technological innovations impacting industries. The course centers on understanding and influencing human behavior within organizations. It examines how employee behavior, motivation, and interpersonal dynamics contribute to organizations’ effectiveness and value creation.
This course guides students through the fundamental knowledge and frameworks to understand and apply the principles of organizational behavior that contribute to organizational goals and objectives. To successfully challenge this course, students should have deep knowledge and experience in organizational behavior management, where they apply theories to real-world scenarios that offer elaborative analysis and examples extensively.
Course Description
BUSBTC 310: Creating Value with People
Develops the competencies required to lead and manage people in a variety of contexts. Topics include organizational behavior, team building, conflict management, motivation, negotiation, career development strategies, and ethical decision-making.
Course Objectives:
- Explain why learning about people’s behavior within the organization contributes to job performance and organizational commitment to help achieve business goals and create value.
- Describe how various factors, such as personality, values, diversity, attitudes, perception, decision-making, motivation, change, stress, organizational structure, and organizational culture affect human behavior within organizations.
- Use strategies for effective interpersonal communication, both as a speaker and a listener to address issues and resolve problems.
- Collaborate respectfully with diverse team members, including virtual interaction, to execute projects.
- Recognize and respond to team process problems and carry out team-building activities needed to develop task effectiveness.
- Explain how leaders and managers affect and modify behavior in followers to achieve organizational objectives.
