In the Language Talent Network the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking for applicants interested in translating and interpreting for the FBI. They look for people who speak a foreign language proficiently, are interested and have experiences in training at the Defense Language Institute or Foreign Service Institute or any equivalent.

What are the Minimum Qualifications and emphasize the skills relevant to language majors?

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Pass a hearing examination
  • Education
  • Experience in Translating or Interpreting
  • Experience in working with English and a Foreign Language.
  • Be tested by the FBI Language Testing and Resources Unit to see if one can meet the demands of the job.

What are the Preferred Qualifications and emphasize the skills relevant to language majors?

  • Translating and interpreting a foreign Language to English and vice versa.
  • Interpret during polygraph examinations and be familiar with the equipment and techniques.
  • Handle all requests for translation and interpretations in all field offices and government agencies.
  • Interpret during interviews/interrogations for investigative personnel.
  • Perform the necessary research for the proper terminology and material to be translated.
  • Experience Training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or other comparable training.

  • Have a general idea of the U.S. Constitution

  • Be proficient in said language
