Chapter 13: Morality and Group Conflict

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you should be able to

  • Identify the two pillars of morality.
  • Explore the continuum of moral behavior created by the two pillars.
  • Discuss the cooperative nature of intergroup conflict.
  • Describe the uniqueness of human warfare.

Chapter Introduction

In Chapter 11, we discussed how humans evolved to be cooperative beings. We build trust through reciprocal altruism and the benefits of mutual exchange. In Chapter 12, we discussed how and why someone might take advantage of that trust.

So, what happens when trust is broken, or never built? And what role does our cooperative nature play in conflict and warfare?

These are among the questions Chapter 13 seeks to unpack.

If humans are so cooperative, why do we engage in so much conflict?
