Chapter 8: Intermission

Admittedly, Chapter 8 is not a chapter with new content. Instead, I suggest taking this time to reflect on knowledge gained thus far. After all, the first seven chapters of this book already introduced many new ideas, research, and theoretical frameworks.

To begin, I suggest review the Chapter Objectives and Review Questions for each chapter. You may also want to explore the Glossary of Terms and identify those items you already know – or need to refresh.

To further review, maybe make some flashcards to test yourself. Or teach what you have learned to someone else. These are tried and true ways of solidifying newly acquired knowledge.

You might even read this brief article about the benefits of retrieval practice when learning new topics.

Why is this a good place to pause?

Most of this book so far has focused on evolution and resulting traits in individuals. As we embark on the second half of our journey, we will begin to explore how these concepts are relevant in group interactions. After all, anthropology is the study of what it means to be human. And a big part of being human is engaging in the social world.

Before you go…

Perhaps also take some time to reward yourself for the work you accomplished thus far. You might read a favorite book (that’s not for class!) or spend some time on your favorite streaming service. You might make time to spend with friends and family or a special someone. Before you go, let’s consider the importance of being social on our health and minds. Take some time to watch the following Ted talk by Kelly McGonigal on how to make stress your friend.

Well timed for the midway point of a class, no?
