Ein-Wörter – Articles that decline like ein
Recall that determiners are words which precede nouns in order to give more precise information about them. Ein-words are determiners that behave, grammatically speaking, like indefinite articles (i.e., ein, eine).
| Die Königin sitzt an einem Fenster aus schwarzem Ebenholz und näht. | The queen sits at a window made of black ebony and sews. |
| Als sie den Schnee betrachtet, sticht sie sich mit der Nadel in ihren Finger; drei Tropfen Blut fallen in den Schnee. | As she watches the snow, she pricks her finger with the needle; three drops of blood fall into the snow. |
| Das Kind, das die Königin zur Welt bringt, ist wunderschön. Seine Haut ist so weiß wie Schnee, seine Lippen sind so rot wie Blut, und seine Haare sind so schwarz wie Ebenholz. Das Kind heißt Schneewittchen. | The child that the queen gives birth to is very beautiful. Its skin is as white as snow, its lips are as red as blood, and its hair is as black as ebony. Like indefinite articles, ein-words agree with the nouns they introduce in terms of gender, number and case.
