Social media can be a great way to ask students to look into another culture while also considering themselves as consumers. So, this lesson plays on that affordance by asking students to review social media and also create a fake social media page to show that they have considered ways in which companies consider culture when marketing to different audiences.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can read and understand social media posts in the target language.
  • I can compare and contrast advertisements in the target community and my own.
  • I can create a social media post for a U.S. company hoping to advertise in the target community.

About the Activity

In this video, I discuss the benefits of incorporating social media and advertising into the world language classroom. I share insights on cultural comparisons, marketing strategies, and student engagement through social media. Action requested: Consider implementing these ideas in the EP French curriculum.
