🌞French Level 3, Activity 01: L’été / Summer (Online)

Description: In this activity, students will converse with their classmates about what they did this summer.
Semantic Topics: summer, conversations, introductions, discussions, l’été, passé composé, l’imparfait, past tense, the imperfect tense

Products: Introductions

Practices: Introducing yourself, small talk, sharing interests

Perspectives: Like much of the world, France places emphasis on the value of friendship and first impressions.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations or correspondence in French to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written French on a variety of topics.

Idaho State Content Standards:

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • COMM 3.1: Present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media in the target language.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can ask and respond to simple questions about dates, times, places, and events on schedules, posters, and tickets.
  • I can be the first to start a conversation.
  • I can ask for information, details, and explanations during a conversation.
  • I can bring a conversation to a close.
  • I can give some information about activities I did. (Past tense!)

Materials Needed:

Warm-up

1. Begin by introducing the Can-Dos for today’s activity.

 

2. Using available internet accessible devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet), find an image of something important that happened this summer (news, movie, games, etc.)

 

3. Describe this event as concisely as possible.

Main Activity

1. Partner-up the students by putting them in breakout rooms.

2. Choose one of the questions and discuss with each other for 2-3 minutes.

Choisissez une question et discutez entre vous durant 2-3 minutes.

 

3. Once the timer has expired, one of the two partners will rotate and sit with another person.

Lorsque le temps est écoulé, un des coéquipiers ira s’asseoir avec une autre personne.

 

4. With your new partner, answer the next question from the list below.

  6. De quoi as-tu hâte pour le présent semestre ? (What are you looking forward to this semester?)
  7. Est-ce que tu as voyagé cet été ? (Did you travel anywhere this summer?)
  8. Quelle était ta partie favorite de l’été ? (What is your favorite part of summer?)
  9. As-tu pris des cours d’été ? (Did you take any summer classes?)
  10. Quel type d’exercice as-tu fait durant l’été ? (What kind of (if any) exercise did you do this summer?)
  11. Comment as-tu pratiqué ton français ? (How did you keep up on your French?)

Wrap-up

Ask the following question(s) to finish the activity:

  • Désirez-vous partager une autre histoire survenue durant votre été ? (Any other summer stories you want to share?)

End of Activity:

  • Can-Do statement check-in… “Where are we?”
  • Read can-do statements and have students evaluate their confidence.
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self evaluation
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
