💌 Spanish Level 1, Activity 10: Estás Invitado / You are Invited (Online)

Description: In this activity, students will practice rejecting or accepting formal invitations to an event. Students will exchange ideas and ask questions about events. They will also plan their own events to invite their classmates to.
Semantic Topics: Invitations, free time, hobbies, events, accepting and rejecting invitations, invitaciones, pasatiempos, eventos, aceptando y rechazando invitaciones 
Grammatical Structures: Stem-changing verbs,  verbos que cambian su raíz
Products: Quinceañera invitations (see Cultural Notes)
Practices: Inviting friends and family to social events
Perspectives: What are polite responses to invitations in Spanish? Why is it important to be polite when accepting or rejecting an invitation?

World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas in Spanish to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1 – Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1 – Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • COMM 3.1 – Present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media in the target language.
  • COMP 1.1 – Observe formal and informal forms of language.
  • COMP 1.3 – Compare and analyze idiomatic expressions in the target language.

Warm Up

Materials Needed for Warm Up

  1. Begin by opening the slideshow and introducing the can-do statements.
    Hola, ¿cómo están? Estoy ____. Vamos a empezar el lab de hoy con los can-do statements.
  2. Play the linked Kahoot! game to practice/learn ways to accept/reject invitations
    Vamos a jugar Kahoot para practicar y aprender frases para aceptar y rechazar invitaciones.
  3. Assign an invitation to each student and tell them that they are going to practice inviting each other to an event.
    Tengo unas invitaciones para unos eventos para ustedes.
  4. Using one of the invitation cards, invite the students to the event on the invitation to model the activity.
    Ahora voy a mostrarles cómo invitar a un amigo o una amiga a un evento. Después de escuchar a mi invitación, tienen que aceptar o rechazar mi invitación.
  5. Now, ask the students who wants to accept the invitation and who wants to reject the invitation, as well as why/why not.
    ¿Quién quiere aceptar mi invitación? ¿Porque sí o porque no?
  6. Students will then practice by inviting the class to their assigned event

Main Activity

Materials Needed for Main Activity

  1. Each student will create an invitation that they will use to invite the other students to a hypothetical activity or event.
    Cada estudiante va a planear una actividad o un evento. Va a invitar a sus amigos a la actividad o evento.
  2. Students will have 5-7 minutes to plan an event using the template provided. They can use a computer document or a pencil and paper. You can also ask them to draw or search for an image to represent the event if they would like.    
    Tienen siete minutos para crear una invitación para la clase. Necesitan incluir toda la información en el ejemplo. Puede usar la computadora o un papel y lápiz y pueden incluir una foto si quieren.
  3. After the time is up, students will invite the rest of the group to their event. Every other student will respond by saying if they would like to attend or not and why.
    Después de siete minutos, los estudiantes van a invitar al resto del grupo a su evento uno por uno. Cada otro estudiante va a responder con una respuesta apropiada (sí/no y por qué). 

Wrap Up

  1. Ask the following questions as a wrap up:
  • ¿Cuál es tu pasatiempo favorito? (What is your favorite hobby?)
  • ¿Prefieres ir a un concierto u obra de teatro? (Do you prefer to go to a concert or to a play?)
  • ¿Te gusta ir a eventos deportivos? (Do you like to go to sporting events?)
  • ¿Haces invitaciones con papel o usando alguna tecnología? (Do you make invitations with paper or through the use of technology?)

End of Lab

  • Read can-do statements and have students evaluate their confidence with cards
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future labs!
