Arabic Level 2, Activity 11: “الأَكْل العَرَبِي / Middle Eastern Food” (Face-to-Face/Online)

 

Description:

In this activity, students will practice the names of different dishes from the Arabic menu. Briefly, they will also discuss some history about the differences in Arabic food culture.

Semantic Topics:

نادل – مقبلات – طبق رئيسي – مشروبات – حلويات/حلو – محاسبة/فاتورة Waiter – Appetizers – Main Course – Drinks – Desserts – Billing

Grammatical Structures: 

Excuse me, من فضلك

Products: Middle Eastern dishes, dishes names at Arabic restaurants.

Practices: Getting familiar with the famous dish of each Middle Eastern country.

Perspectives: In middle east culture, people usually enjoy eating on the floor using their eight hands to grab the food.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations or correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written Arabic on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures of the Arab world.
  • Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between the cultures of the Arab world and their own

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions

  • CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.

  • I know the food names at Arabic restaurants, including ordering vocabulary such as drinks, entrees, desserts..etc.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

  1. Use Google Slideshow and share your screen with the students.  You will ask the students, “How would you say?”  Appetizers or entrees – Main dishes – Drinks – Dessert – Excuse me.  (The slide show is designed to show the answer after you click on the mouse)

سوف تسأل الطلاب “كيف نقول؟”
مقبلات او مقبلات – اطباق رئيسية – مشروبات – حلويات – وعذراً / من فضلك.

Main Activity

  1. You will ask the students: “Where is this -Dish’s- culture coming from?”
    سوف تسأل الطلاب: “من أين تأتي ثقافة هذا الطبق؟”.
  2. If they did not know, ask them to guess. For example البقلاوة Baklawa : الشام ، العراق ، والأساس تركيا (The slideshow is designed to show the answer after the picture when you click on the mouse)
    إذا لم يعرفوا ، اطلب منهم أن يخمنوا فقط.
    فمثلا:
    البقلاوة:
    الشام ، العراق ، والأساس تركيا
    (عرض الشرائح مصمم لإظهار الإجابة بعد الصورة عند النقر بالماوس
  3. After going through all the questions, there is one slide about interesting facts in Middle Eastern food culture. Share it with students!
    بعد الانتهاء من جميع الأسئلة ، هناك شريحة واحدة حول حقائق مثيرة للاهتمام في ثقافة الطعام في الشرق الأوسط. شاركها مع الطلاب!

    Wrap-Up

    1. Ask students, “what is your favorite Middle Eastern dish?”And let them practice reading some of the Arabic dishes’ names! Each student can read 1 or 2 dish names. اسأل الطلاب “ما هو طبق الشرق الأوسط المفضل لديك؟”
      وليتمرنوا على قراءة بعض أسماء الأطباق العربية! يمكن لكل طالب قراءة 1 أو 2  من أسماء الأطباق..

    End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
