Arabic Level 2, Activity 12: “حُرُوف الـمَد الطَوِيلَة / Long Vowels” (Face-to-Face/online)

Description:

In this activity, students will practice writing some basic words that people usually use in their daily life as well as practice writing حروف المد الثلاثة.

Semantic Topics:

كاسة – سكينة – عود – (أي مفردات نستخدمها دائماً تحمل حروف المد), Cup – Knife – Oud

Grammatical Structures: 

حروف المد الثلاثة, long vowels, المدود

Products: daily vocabulary, short and long vowels.

Practices: pronouncing short and long vowels.

Perspectives: What is the importance of long vowels in a word? what is the difference between pronouncing short and long vowels?

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations or correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written Arabic on a variety of topics.

  • CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.

  • I can understand the differences between the three long vowels.
  • I can write words in Arabic using long vowels.
  • I can understand when I should use long vowels and when I should not.

Materials Needed:

  • Each student needs to have a sheet and a black marker.
  • The answers cards.

Warm-Up

On Zoom, click “Share,” then “White Board.” Take 2-3 minutes for students to write on the whiteboard. Use the table below to refresh their minds about the long vowels. The table explains the letter by itself and after adding the long vowel. Let students read them.

Main Activity

  1. Stop sharing your screen. Ask students to have a white empty sheet and a black marker.

  1. Then, ask them to write the words below in their own sheet. Take your time in spelling each word clearly and stressing on حروف المد الثلاثة Don’t show them the right answer now. كاسة – زجاجة – باب – تلفاز – خاتم – باردسكينة – جديد – لذيذ – حكيم – عصير – حليبفول – يذوب – يفوز – يجوع – طيور – فصولثم اطلب منهم كتابة الكلمات أدناه في الورقة الخاصة بهم. خذ وقتك في تهجئة كل كلمة بوضوح والتأكيد على حروف المد الثلاثةلا تظهر لهم الإجابة الصحيحة الآن.

    Wrap-Up

    1. For the wrap-up, share your screen with your students and show them the answer cards in the lab 12 folder.
    2. Ask them to check how many words they got right.
    3. Clap your hands for the winners!
