Arabic Level 2, Activity 07: “الهِوَايَات / Hobbies” (Face-to-Face/Online)

Description:

In this activity, students will practice discussing their hobbies, likes, and dislikes. They will be able to describe their daily activities. Students will also be able to discuss preferences they have about their daily activities. Students will learn to ask others questions about their schedule and daily activities.

Semantic Topics:

قبل – بعد – أثناء – سباحة – رياضة – قراءة – كرة السلة – كرة القدم – الجري – الرسم – التصوير – السفر, before, after, during, swimming, reading, football, running, dawing, photograpghy

Grammatical Structures: 

nouns, hobbies, before and after

Products: The most common sports in the Middle Eastern are swimming, archery, and horse riding.

Practices: While there are so many common sports in Middle Eastern culture. Horse riding comes at the top of the list. There is a famous quote from Omar who is one of the four Rightly-Guided Caliphs: “teach your children, swimming, archery, and horse riding”.

Perspectives: What are the three most significant sports in Middle Eastern countries? Why is it famous?

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations or correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written Arabic on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures of the Arab world.
  • Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between the cultures of the Arab world and their own

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • CLTR 1.1: Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
  • CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can ask and answer questions about my hobbies.
  • I can talk about my favorite hobby and my least favorite hobby.
  • I know how to use “after” or “before” in a sentence.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

  1. You will ask students how to say some of the hobbies in Arabic. For example, how would you say?  After – Before – During?سوف تسأل الطلاب كيف يقولون بعض الهوايات باللغة العربية.
    على سبيل المثال ، كيف تقول؟ بعد – قبل – اثناء؟.

Main Activity

  1. Students will choose a number and come up with a sentence according to the image that will appear to them.
    سيختار الطلاب رقمًا وسيخرجون بجملة وفقًا للصورة التي ستظهر لهم..
  2. After a student chooses the number, you will ask him/her what she/he is doing. “What are you doing?” “ماذا تفعل؟”بعد أن يختار الطالب الرقم ، سوف تسأله عما يفعله. “ماذا تفعل؟”
  3. The student will answer the question using correct grammar. And using the cards he/she has. “I’m swimming” “أنا أسبح”يجيب الطالب على السؤال باستخدام القواعد الصحيحة. وباستخدام البطاقات التي يمتلكها. “أنا أسبح “
  4.  You can ask the student then, “When do you usually swim?”. Students will explain what they are doing after/before/during an action.  “I usually swim after school”يمكنك أن تسأل الطالب متى تسبح عادة؟ سيشرح الطلاب ما يفعلونه بعد / قبل / أثناء إجراء ما. “عادة ما أسبح بعد المدرسة”.
  5. Then students will take turns doing the same until they finish all the images.
    ثم يتناوب الطلاب على فعل الشيء نفسه حتى ينتهوا من جميع الصور.

    Wrap-Up

    1. Ask the student some of these questions:
      1. What are your hobbies?
      2. What do you like to do when you have time?
      اطرح على الطالب بعض هذه الأسئلة:
      ما هي هواياتك؟
      ماذا تحب أن تفعل في وقت الفراغ؟

    End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
