Description:

 Students will practice asking and answering interview questions. They will also practice using vocabulary surrounding careers and the workplace and speaking about hypothetical situations.

Semantic Topics: Interview, career, future career, job, work, strength, weakness, employee, employer, مقابلة، مقابلة عمل، قوة، ضعف، موظف، مدرس، تقني، شيف، محاسب، مهندس

Grammatical Structures: future tense, Subject pronunciation, yes/no questions

Products: Job types, careers

Practices: Interview asking and answering questions, preparing for interviews.

Perspectives: The importance of being able to articulate one’s skills and abilities, the importance of having and/or getting a job.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1 :Students engage in conversations or correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written Arabic on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures of the Arab world.
  • Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between the cultures of the Arab world and their own

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • CLTR 1.1: Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
  • CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can discuss my career and discuss if I like it or not.
  • I can answer interview questions and speak about my answer.
  • I can talk about my strength and weakness.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

  1. Ask students those three questions in Arabic:
Do you work this semester?
What is your job? / What do you do?
do you like your work? Why?
اسأل الطلاب الأسئلة التالية:

هل تَعْمَل هَذا الفَصل؟

ماهُو عَمَلُك؟ / ماذا تَعْمل؟

هل تُحِب عَمَلك؟ لماذا؟ 

  1. Try to start answering the questions first to encourage students.
    ابدأ بالاجابة اولاً حتى تشجعهم

Main Activity

  1. students will be working in pairs. one will be the Interviewer and the other will be the interviewee.
    سيعمل الطلاب في أزواج. سيكون أحدهما المحاور والآخر سيكون الشخص الذي تمت مقابلته.
  2. The interviewer will be asking questions to the interviewee and taking notes, by the end of the questions the interviewer will choose a job for the interviewee based on his/her answer.سيقوم القائم بإجراء المقابلة بطرح أسئلة على الشخص الذي تتم مقابلته وتدوين الملاحظات ، بحلول نهاية الأسئلة ، سيختار القائم بإجراء المقابلة وظيفة بناءً على إجابته/ إجابتها.
  3. The interviewee will be answering questions, choosing from the multiple choices but also adding a few details about his/her answer.سوف يجيب الشخص الذي تتم مقابلته على الأسئلة ، ويختار من بين الخيارات المتعددة ، ولكن أيضًا يضيف بعض التفاصيل حول إجابته.
  4. when finishing the interview, switch roles and do it again.عند الانتهاء ، بدّلوا الأدوار وافعلوا ذلك مرة أخرى.

    Wrap-Up

    1. ask students this question: Do you agree with the job proposed to you?
      اسأل الطلاب هذا السؤال: هل تُوَافِق عَلى الوَظيفة المُقْتَرَحة لك؟.

    End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
    their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
