German Level 2, Activity #04: Gesundes Leben / Healthy Living (Face to Face)

Description: In this activity, students will review vocabulary relating to the body and parts of the body. Additionally, students will practice talking about health and how they stay healthy.
Semantic Topics: Body, Körper, health, Gesundheit, healthy, gesund, sports, Sport, food, Essen, nutrition, Ernährung, new vocabulary memorizing the der, die, das, die,  neues Vokabular zum Auswendiglernen von der, die, das, die.

Products: Healthy living cards.  Gesund leben karten.

Practices: Healthy living activities.  Aktivitäten für ein gesundes Leben.

Perspectives: Healthy living and outdoor activities are important in German speaking countries.  Gesundes Wohnen und Outdoor-Aktivitäten sind im deutschsprachigen Raum wichtig.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.
  • Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through German.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions
  • Objective: COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • Objective: CLTR 1.1: Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
  • Objective: CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.
  • Objective: CONN 1.2: Relate information studied in other subjects to the target language and culture.

1. Parts of the Body Pictionary with pre-made flashcards.

2. Divide students into two teams.

3. Decide which team will go first and have one team-member choose a card and begin to draw on a big or small whiteboard for their team. 20 seconds per card.

4. Repeat until one team reaches 9 points or the cards are gone.

Main Activity

1. Set the Gesund Leben Karten in the middle as a guide for the students.

2. Students will think about ways to stay healthy.

Die Schüler werden darüber nachdenken, wie sie gesund bleiben können.

3. With each slide as a prompt, students should be able to come up with ideas to keep the body healthy, within different sections Koerperpflege, Gesund sein, and Sport.

Mit jeder Folie als Aufforderung sollen die Schüler in der Lage sein, ideen zu entwickeln, um den Körper gesund zu halten, in verschiedenen Bereichen Koerperpflege, Gesund sein und Sport.

4. Encourage students to also think of ideas outside of the cards.

Ermutigen Sie die Schüler, auch an Ideen außerhalb der Karten zu denken.


1. What do you do to live a healthy life?

Was macht ihr, um gesund zu leben?

2. Do you eat healthy? How often?

Esst ihr gesund? Wie oft?

3. What sport do you do?

Welchen Sport treibt ihr?

End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
