💪German Level 2, Activity 04: Gesundes Leben / Healthy Living (Face to Face)

Description: In this activity, students will review vocabulary relating to the body and parts of the body. Additionally, students will practice talking about health and how they stay healthy.
Semantic Topics: body, körper, health, gesundheit, healthy, gesund, sports, sport, food, essen, nutrition, ernährung

Products: Healthy living cards.  Gesund leben karten.

Practices: Healthy living activities.  Aktivitäten für ein gesundes Leben.

Perspectives: Healthy living and outdoor activities are important in German speaking countries.  Gesundes Leben und Outdoor-Aktivitäten sind im deutschsprachigen Raum wichtig.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.
  • Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through German.

Idaho State Content Standards:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • Objective: COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • Objective: CLTR 1.1: Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
  • Objective: CLTR 1.2: Explain the relationship between cultural practices/behaviors and the perspectives that represent the target culture’s view of the world.
  • Objective: CONN 1.2: Relate information studied in other subjects to the target language and culture.

Warm-up

Parts-of-the-Body Pictionary with pre-made flashcards.

1. Divide students into two teams.

2. Decide which team will go first and have one team-member choose a card and begin to draw on a big or small whiteboard for their team. 20 seconds per card.

3. Repeat until one team reaches 9 points or the cards are gone.

Main Activity

Set the Gesund Leben Karten upside down in the middle of a table.

Setzen Sie die Gesund Leben Karten als Leitfaden für die Schüler in die Mitte.

1. Divide students into two teams.

3. Students will then try to guess what the student is describing in German.

Wrap-up

Ask students the following question(s) to finish the activity:

  • Was macht ihr, um gesund zu leben? (What do you do to live a healthy life?)
  • Esst ihr gesund? Wie oft? (Do you eat healthy? How often?)
  • Treibt ihr einen Sport? (Do you play a sport?)

End of Activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence. (Use thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
