  • You can find cheap, worn-out Birkenstocks at Goodwill for the final activity if no students have any.
  • Site Name: NTV – Birkenstock-Werk in Pasewalk eröffnet – Birkenstock Plant in Pasewalk opens.

The news story and all  photos in this activity are from NTV, a German free-to-air Television News Channel, FreeInterTV.com.

Activity Instructions

  1. Pre Pre-Reading: Watch this video, it’s music only – no words,  about How Birkenstocks are made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGB3liIVgvo . Divide the students into groups of four and give each student or group a copy of the photos about a new Birkenstocks factory in Pasewalk.
  2. Pre-Reading:  Using the Logographic clues, each group makes a prediction about what the text is about.  Have 1 student from each group share.
  3. Pre-Reading:  Use a collaborative big white board, every student writes down words (German or English) they think associate with the photos.   Then you can feed off these words to provide an introduction in German about what is to come.Use everything – visual cues, body language, target-language equivalents, common associations. – be slow and simplifying to use German to help them understand the photos.  Many new words and ideas with this. Leave these words on the board.  Tell them the more words they come up with in this activity, the easier the reading will be.
  4. Instructions:  Pass out the copy of the news article from NTV and the reading graphic organizer. Divide the groups into pairs.   Each student will read the first, then second, then third, then fourth paragraphs separately.  Do the post-reading, Step 6 after each paragraph.
  5. During Reading: Have each student quietly skim the paragraph and underline in red any word from the pre-reading, Step 3, activity.  Then read the paragraph.
  6. During Reading:  Have the students complete the graphic organizer where they identify key components of the text. They also highlight the information in different colors to indicate the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “why” of the text. If possible make sure every student has a pink, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple highlighter. This will match the graphic organizer colors.
  7. Post-Reading:  Using the Key Word Recall activity.  You will select 15 key words ( from the appropriate words in Step 3)and write them on the big board or overhead.  In Groups of 4 have the students write a summary of their reading using the keywords you selected.
  8. Post-Reading:  Have each group of 4 create a tiktok advertisement for Birkenstocks.  Hopefully you will have enough Birkenstocks from the preparation activity – if not the students can use the photo from the activity.  Have each group share their tiktok.
