German Level 3, Activity 07: Monatliche Ausgaben und Lebenssituationen / Monthly Expenses and Living Situations (Face to Face)

Description: Students will discuss and answer questions about their current living situations, as well as what their living expenses look like.

Semantic Topics:  Expenses, Spesen, Groceries, Lebensmittel, Bills, Rechnungen, Housing, Wohnen, Rent, Miete, Question Words, Fragewörtern, Future, Futur, Comparative, Vergleichende.

Products: Jamboard to draw out living situations.  Jamboard, um Lebenssituationen herauszuarbeiten.

Practices: The use of space, paying expenses, decorating,  dream living situations, roommates in living settings.  Raumnutzung, Ausgaben bezahlen, dekorieren, Wohnträume, Mitbewohner im Wohnumfeld.

Perspectives:  Value of choice in how we live, who we live with, how we decorate.  Importance of paying living expenses.  Wert der Wahl, wie wir leben, mit wem wir leben, wie wir dekorieren. Bedeutung der Zahlung der Lebenshaltungskosten.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.

Idaho State Content Standards:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1 Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • Objective: COMM 2.1 Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can explain my monthly bills and expenses.
  • I can discuss my living situation.
  • I can explain my preferences around decoration, roommates, and purchases.

Materials Needed:

Warm-Up

Discuss the Can-Do Statements with the students.

(5 minutes)

Fünf Minuten

 

1. Have students take out a piece of paper and a writing utensil.

Die Studenten sollen ein Zettel und ein Schreibgerät rausnehmen.

 

2. The students will have 5 minutes to draw a rough layout of their living situation.

Die Studenten werden 5 Minuten haben um ein Bild von ihrer Wohnung zu malen.

Main Activity

Discussion about  living situation and expenses.  Have the students ask each other the following questions.

Diskussion über Lebenssituation und Ausgaben.  Lassen Sie die Schüler einander die folgenden Fragen stellen.

  • Wo wohnst du? Where do you live?
  • Wohnst du in einer WG oder bei deiner Familie? (​​​​​​​Do you live in an apartment or with family?)
  • ​​​​​​​Hast du Mitbewohner? Wie viele? Do you have any roommates? How many?
  • Benutzt du Schmuck für Feiertage? Do you decorate your house for the seasons?
  • Welche berühmte Person hättest du gerne als Mitbewohner und warum? (If you could choose a famous person to be your roommate who would it be and why?)
  • Wie erkennt man einen guten Mitbewohner? (What qualities make a good roommate?)
  • Wo kaufst du dein Hausdekor? (Where do you like to shop for decorations?)
  • Benutzt du Festschmuck für Feiertage? Welche Feiertage? (Do you decorate your house for Occasions? Which ones?)
  • Welches Zimmer benutzt du am meisten/ am liebsten? (Which room do you use the most/is your favorite?)
  • Wo kaufst du Essen? (Where do you shop for food?)
  • Wie viel Geld gibst du jede Woche für Essen aus? (How much money do you spend every week on food?)
  • Was benutzt du um dein Geld zu sparen? (Do you use any tools to manage your money?)
  • Wie sparst du Geld beim Einkaufen? (How do you find the best deals when shopping?)
  • Kaufst du lieber vor Ort ein oder online? (Do you prefer shopping in store or online?)

Wrap-Up

Ask students the following question to finish the activity:

  • Was ist dein Traumhause/Wohnort? (What is your dream house?)

End of Activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence. (Use thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
