German Level 3, Activity #07: Monatliche Ausgaben und Lebenssituationen / Monthly Expenses and Living Situations (Online)

Description: Students will discuss and answer questions about their current living situations, as well as what their living expenses look like.
Semantic Topics:  Expenses, Spesen, groceries, Lebensmittel, Bills, Rechnungen, Housing, Wohnen, Rent, Miete,  Fragen,  Future, Futur, Comparative,  Vergleichende.

Products:  Jamboard to draw out living situations.  Jamboard, um Lebenssituationen herauszuarbeiten.

Practices: The use of space, paying expenses, decorating,  dream living situations, roommates in living settings.  Raumnutzung, Ausgaben bezahlen, Dekorieren, Wohnträume, Mitbewohner im Wohnumfeld.

Perspectives:  Value of choice in how we live, who we live with, how we decorate.  Importance of paying living expenses.  Wert der Wahl, wie wir leben, mit wem wir leben, wie wir dekorieren. Bedeutung der Zahlung der Lebenshaltungskosten.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.

Idaho Content Standards for World Languages:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • Objective: COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can explain my monthly bills and expenses.
  • I can discuss my living situation.

Materials Needed: 

Warm Up

1. Share the Jamboard link with the students.

  • Teilen Sie den Jamboard-Link mit den Schülern.

2. Students will have 5 minutes to draw a rough layout of their living situation.

Main Activity

Students will discuss their living situation and expenses.  Divide the students into breakout rooms and have them discuss the following questions in their rooms:

  • Where do you live?

  • Do you have any roommates? How many?

  • Do you decorate your house for the seasons?
    • Benutzt du Schmuck für Feiertage?
  • If you could choose a famous person to be your roommate who would it be and why?
    • Welche berühmte Person hättest du gerne als Mitbewohner und warum?
  • What qualities make a good roommate?
    • Wie erkennt man einen guten Mitbewohner?
  • Where do you like to shop for decorations?
    • Wo kaufst du dein Hausdekor?
  • Do you decorate your house for Occasions? Which ones?
    • Benutzt du Festschmuck für Feiertage? Welche Feiertage?
  • What’s your favorite room in your house?
    • Welches Zimmer benutzt du am meisten/ am liebsten?
  • Where do you shop for food?
    • Wo kaufst du Essen?
  • How much money do you spend every week on food?
    • Wie viel Geld gibst du jede Woche für Essen aus?
  • Do you use any tools to manage your money?
    • Was benutzt du um dein Geld zu sparen?
  • How do you find the best deals when shopping?
    • Wie sparst du Geld beim Einkaufen?
  • Do you prefer shopping in store or online?
    • Kaufst du lieber vor Ort ein oder online?

Wrap Up

Ask the students:

What is your dream house/place of residence?

  • Was ist dein Traumhaus/Wohnort?

End of Activity

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence.
    (Use thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
