Description: Students will be asked to interpret a menu, and using the information from the menu, be able to recommend foods based on the customers preference and allergies.

Semantic Topics: food, essen, allergies, allergien, vegetarian, vegetarisch, price, preis, meat, fleisch, appetizer, vorspeise, main dish, hauptgericht, drink, getränk.

NCSFFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied.

Idaho State Content Standards:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1: Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • Objective: COMM 2.1: Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • Objective: CLTR 1.1: Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
  • Objective: CLTR 2.3: Justify the underlying beliefs or values of the target culture that resulted in the creation of the product.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements:

  • I can create simple sentences using food vocabulary.
  • I can use high frequency and low frequency phrases related to food.
  • I can recognize food from a menu.
  • I can recommend food dishes for people with certain allergies and preferences.

Instructions

  1. Read out the can-do statements. Lesen Sie die “Can-Do Statements” vor.
  2. Have students answer the questions on the aufwärmen slides in their table groups or as a whole class. Die Studenten werden die aufwärmen Fragen in Gruppen oder mit der ganzen Klasse antworten. 
  3. Before we read the menu. Ask students with words or foods they think would be in a menu? Have them discuss and write down the english translations on the board for them. If they haven’t learned the vocabulary for these words yet, go over them. Bevor Sie die Speisekarte lesen, fragen Sie die Studenten was sie denken auf eine Speisekarte sein wird. Lassen sie die Studenten diskutieren und schreiben Sie die übersetzungen auf der Tafel. Wenn die Studenten diese Wörter noch nicht kennen, wiederholden Sie die Wörter. 
  4. Have printed copies of this menu and the reading graphic organizer. Have students go through the menu and categorize the different foods into the organizer, this will help them with the main activity. Drücken Sie das Menü und Graphic Organizer aus.   6. After students find out this information, they will then recommend an appetizer, main dish, and drink to their friend. Nachdem sie diese Informationen herausfinden , werden die Studenten eine Vorspiese, Hauptgericht und Getränk für den Partner empfehlen. 
  7. Afterwards, have students reflect on if they would eat the food recommended to them or not and why. Am Ende werden die Studenten entscheiden ob sie das empfohlenes Essen essen möchte oder nicht und warum.
