🧑‍🤝‍🧑German Level 2, Activity 06: Menschen Beschreiben / Describing People (Face to Face)

Description: In this activity, students will practice describing themselves and their peers by playing a game of Guess Who.
Semantic Topics: descriptions, beschreibungen, game, spiel, features, funktionen, adjective, adjektiv

Products: Name Cards, Namenskarten.

Practices: Using German descriptive language to describe individuals. Verwendung der deutschen Beschreibungwörter zur Beschreibung von Personen.

Perspectives: Valuing people as individuals with individual characteristics. Wertschätzung von Menschen als Individuen mit individuellen Eigenschaften.

NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards:

  • Standard: 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard: 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard: 3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through German.

Idaho State Content Standards:

  • Objective: COMM 1.1 Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
  • Objective: COMM. 2.1 Understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
  • Objective: CONN 1.2 Relate information studied in other subjects to the target language and culture.

Warm-Up

Beschreiben! (Description of the people whose names are on the cards).

1. Two groups

Zwei Gruppen

 

2. Each person must take a card and read it.

Jede Person muss eine Karte nehmen und sie lesen.

 

3. Describe the person on the card, as well as you can!

Beschreibt die Person auf der Karte, so gut wie möglich! 

 

4. The group must guess it correctly.

Die Gruppe muss es richtig vermuten.

Main Activity

The Students will ask each other questions to try and guess the person they have.

Die Schüler werden sich gegenseitig Fragen stellen, um zu versuchen, die Person, die sie haben, zu erraten.

 

1. Have students choose their partners and sit across from them as in Guess Who.

Lassen Sie die Schüler ihre Partner auswählen und ihnen gegenübersitzen, wie in Guess Who.

 

2. Give out the name cards facedown, one per person. These need to be hidden from the partner.

Geben Sie die Namenskarten verderbt aus, eine pro Person. Diese müssen vor dem Partner verborgen werden.

 

3. The students need to ask each other “Ja/Nein” Fragen

Die Schüler müssen sich gegenseitig “Ja/Nein” Fragen fragen.

4. When the person is guessed, have them exchange cards and switch partners.

Wenn die Person erraten wird, lassen Sie sie Karten austauschen und den Partner wechseln.

  • The physical description can be done 2-3 times (depending on time).
  • Die physikalische Beschreibung kann 2-3 mal (je nach Zeit) erfolgen.

 

5. Then change the slide to the Neue Worter! Slide, have them guess the meaning of the new words and then switch to the descriptive words slides.

Dann wechseln Sie die Rutsche in den Neuen Worter! Lassen Sie sie die Bedeutung der neuen Wörter erraten und wechseln Sie dann zu den beschreibenden Wortfolien.

 

6. Same process as before but now the students will ask questions based on the words describing personality.

Derselbe Prozess wie zuvor, aber jetzt werden die Schüler Fragen stellen, die auf den Worten basieren, die die Persönlichkeit beschreiben.

  • The Personality description can be done 1-2 times (depending on time).
  • Die Persönlichkeitsbeschreibung kann 1-2 mal (je nach Zeit) erfolgen.

Wrap-up

Ask students the following question to finish the activity:

  • Wie würdet ihr euch selbst beschreiben? (How would you describe yourself?)

End of Activity:

  • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence. (Use thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
